The survey of the Holy Sepulcher

A wonderful experience

Last Saturday evening 17th of December has been really extraordinary for us, since we started the first part of the survey of the Chapel of the Invention of the Holy Cross, inside the Holy Sepulcher.

We would have never believed to reach this place during our thesis!

However, the speed of the TLS Faro Focus 3D has allowed us to acquire many data in few time at a very, very high resolution, so now we are definitely sure to be able to partially survey also this extraordinary place!

The only inconvenient will be then the huge amount of data to manage in our thesis!

Concerning the data processing step, we have already processed many data on site by means of JRC 3D Reconstructor software, so we feel confident in a fast work of the next processing job at our return.

Now we have to go: a fantastic Israeli breakfast is waiting for us!We hope to be back to you very soon!

Un'esperienza straordinaria

Il 17 dicembre abbiamo trascorso un sabato sera alternativo: dalle 18.30 alle 22.45 effettuando i primi rilievi della Cappella dell'Invenzione della Santa Croce, all'interno della Basilica del Santo Sepolcro.

Non credevamo che il nostro studio ci avrebbe portato fino a qui!

Invece, grazie alla velocità del laser scanner Faro Focus 3D, che ci ha permesso di raccogliere molti dati in breve tempo ad un'altissima risoluzione, riusciremo a rilevare anche parte di questo straordinario posto.

L'unico inconveniente saràla grande mole di dati da inserire nella nostra tesi!

Confidiamo nella successiva fase di elaborazione: il software JRC 3D Reconstructor ci ha permesso di elaborare già molta parte dei dati direttamente in sito, il resto lo completeremo al nostro ritorno.

Torneremo da voi il prima possibile, ma non prima di aver assoporato la magnifica colazione israeliana che ci attende!

REPORT from HOLY LAND_CAFARNAUM

DAY 24
DATE: 14_12_2011


Object: 3D survey of archaeological site
After more than three weeks, we have finally finished to acquire the 3D laser scanner data of Cafarnaum site, for a total of 289 scans!
Yesterday, during the post-processing elaboration, we have realized that there were some gaps between some scans and so we have acquired new data to fill these gap. We hope everything now works properly!!!
Today, early in the afternoon, we will leave our accommodation "Casa Nova Tiberias" where, thanks to the kind availability and hospitality of Andrey and his entire staff, for the last 20 days we have felt like home.
We would like to thank especially the custodians of the archaeological site, Father Jeromme and Father Vincent who, from the beginning, have welcomed us with them making our presence a really happy event .
We would like also to say Good luck to our super transport, a VW Caravelle 1990 petrol, obviously full-optional, that will have to spend a very hard trip in hostile territories.
Once left Tiberias, we will not know if we will still have an Internet connection and so, please, waiting anxiously for our next news.

Obiettivo: rilievo 3D sito archeologico
Dopo più di tre settimane abbiamo terminato le acquisizioni nel sito di Cafarnaum, in totale sono state effettuate 289 scansioni.
Nella giornata di ieri abbiamo integrato delle scansioni poiché in fase di post-elaborazione ci eravamo accorti di alcune lacune.
Speriamo vadano bene!!!
Nel primo pomeriggio di oggi lasceremo il nostro alloggio “Casa Nova Tiberias” dove, grazie alla gentilezza ed accoglienza di Andrey e tutto il suo staff, per 20 giorni ci siamo sentiti come a casa.
Un plauso lo meritano i custodi del sito archeologico, padre Jeromme e padre Vicent che sin da subito ci hanno accolto alla loro mensa facendo della nostra presenza un lieto avvenimento.
Un grosso in bocca al lupo al nostro mezzo di trasporto un VW Caravelle del 1990 a benzina, ovviamente full optional che dovrà affrontare un impegnativo viaggio di circa 200 km in territori ostili.
Una volta lasciata Tiberiade non sapremo se avremo ancora la disponibilità di una connessione e dunque rimanete in trepida attesa fino alle nostre prossime notizie.

Here we are! We now come to the end of the acquisitions in Cafarnaum, there are still a few days to complete the synagogue.

Here, too, had seen the problems with the color in Sant Peter's house , it was necessary to detect times of day when there wasn't the presence of direct light.

Meanwhile, we have almost completed the alignment of the residential area and continues editing of Sant Peter's house.

Eccoci! Siamo ormai giunti al termine delle acquisizioni a Cafarnao, restano ancora pochi giorni per completare la sinagoga.

Anche qui, visto i problemi avuti con il colore nella casa di Pietro, si è reso necessario rilevare in ore del giorno in cui non ci fosse la presenza di luce diretta.

Nel frattempo abbiamo quasi terminato gli allineamenti del quartiere abitativo e prosegue l'editing della casa di Pietro.
